Procedure
E or Z-(R)-1-[2-[[2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)-2-(2-methylphenyl)ethenyl]oxy]ethyl]-3-piperidine carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.50 g, 0.0012 mol) (prepared as described in Method D) was dissolved in ethanol (15 ml) and 12N sodium hydroxide solution (0.2 ml) was introduced. After stirring the solution at room temperature for 6 h, ice (100 g) was added, and the pH of the reaction mixture was adjusted to ca. 7 with 37% hydrochloric acid solution. Dichloromethane (200 ml) was added, and the pH was further adjusted to <2 with 37% hydrochloric acid solution. The dichloromethane phase was dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to a solid (0.3 g, 60%), m.p. 188°-192°.
