In a round-bottomed flask, a solution of 2.4 g of p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol in 10 ml of ethanol and 5.3 g of ()-3-trifluoromethylheptyl p-toluenesulfonate were placed, and a solution of 0.8 g of sodium hydroxide in 10 ml of ethanol was added thereto dropwise, followed by 6 hours of heat-refluxing, cooling by standing and acidification with hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was extracted with diethyl ether. The resultant ether solution was dried with sodium sulfate and subjected to distilling-off of the solvent and purification by silica gel column chromatography to obtain 4.4 g of (+)-p-(3-trifluoromethylheptyloxy)benzyl alcohol. [α]D28 +1.0 °, [α]43527 +2.4° (c 5.0, chloroform).
