Procedure
12-Bromo-dodecan-1-ol (5.12 g, 19.3 mmol) was added to a vigorously stirred solution of dihydropyran (2.1 mL, 23.2 mmol) and Amberlyst HI5 (0.25 g, Aldrich D10,620-8) in hexane (100 mL). After 3 hours dihydropyran (2.1 mL) was added and the solution stirred for a further 15 hours. The mixture was then filtered, and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo and chromatographed graphed on silica gel, eluting with 2% ethyl acetate in hexane to give the title compound, (a), 8.02 g (75%), as an oil.
