Procedure
A solution of sodium bicarbonate (4.30 g; 0.05 mole) in water (60 ml) was added dropwise to a stirred suspension of pyrimidine-2,4-dithiol prepared as above (2.16 g, 0.015 mole) and S-n-octylthioisothiourea hydrochloride obtained in step (A) (7.695 g, 0.03 mole) in methanol (70 ml) at 60°-65° C. over 30 minutes. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for a further hour and then extracted into naphtha (3×50 ml). The organic extracts were washed with water, dried using anhydrous MgSO4 and evaporated yielding the product as an orange oil (5.54 g; 85%).
