114 g of 3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexylacetic acid in 350 ml of dry ether in a round flask which is fitted with a thermometer, stirrer, reflux condenser and dropping funnel are treated rapidly with 32.8 g of phosphorus trichloride and the mixture is subsequently held at reflux temperature for a further 4 hours. The phosphorous acid is decanted off and the ether is evaporated in vacuo. There are obtained 128 g (yield: quantitive) of crude 3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexylacetyl chloride.
