Procedure

2,3-Dicyano-5-chloropyrazine (0.83 g; 0.005 mole) was dissolved in 25 ml of acetone. The solution was cooled to 0° to 5° C., and with stirring, a solution prepared from 0.54 g (0.005 mole) of p-cresol, 0.21 g (0.005 mole) of sodium hydroxide, 1 ml of water and 15 ml of acetone was added dropwise over the period of 15 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 0° to 5° C. for 1 hour. After the reaction, the solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure. The residue was extracted with 100 ml of chloroform. The chloroform solution was washed with 30 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and 30 of water and dried over anhydrous calcium chloride. Then, the solvent was distilled off. Recrystallization of the crude product from ethanol afforded 0.49 g (yield 41%) of 2,3-dicyano-5-(p-methylphenoxy)pyrazine.
