A solution of 5-amino-4-cyano-1-(2,2-diethoxyethyl)-pyrazole (23 g) in lN hydrochloric acid (205 ml) was heated at 60-70° C. The mixture was stirred for 0.5 hour at the same condition. The reaction mixture was cooled under ice-water and the resultant solid was collected by filtration, washed with ice-water and dried over phosphorus pentoxide in vacuo to the crude product. The product was crystallized from ethanol (400 ml) to give 7-cyano-1H-imidazo[1,2-b]pyrazole (12.4 g).
