Procedure
A mixture of 4-bromo-N-(2-chlorobenzyl)-benzamidine (1.4 g, 4.3 mmol), sodium bicarbonate (0.72 g, 8.6 mmol) and ethyl bromopyruvate (0.98 mL, 7.8 mmol) in EtOH (14 mL) was heated in a microwave unit (Biotage Initiator™) at 175° C. for 12 min. The resulting mixture was decanted and the solids rinsed with EtOAc. The combined filtrates were concentrated and purified by chromatography (silica, EtOAc/Hex, 0:100 to 40:60) to give the title compound (0.24 g, 13%) as a pale brown residue. 1H-NMR (DCM-d2): 0.5-7.58-7.62 (m, 3H), 7.43-7.49 (m, 3H), 7.34 (m, 1H), 7.28 (m, 1H), 6.96 (d, 1H), 5.30 (s, 2H), 4.32 (q, 2H), 1.35 (t, 3H); MS (ES): 419, 421 [M+H]+.
