To a stirred solution of (4-benzyloxy-6-fluoro-3-methyl-naphthalen-2-yl)-acetic acid methyl ester (15.8 g, 46.7 mmol) in MeOH (150 mL) was added 10% palladium on carbon (2.4 g). The resulting mixture was vigorously stirred under a balloon of hydrogen overnight. The reaction mixture was filtered through celite. The filtrate was concentrated to give the crude product, which was purified by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to yield (6-fluoro-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-naphthalen-2-yl)-acetic acid methyl ester (9.5 g, 82%) as a white solid. MS calcd. for C14H14FO3 [(M+H)+] 249, obsd. 249.1.
