Procedure
To a solution of methyl (4-bromomethyl-phenyl)acetate (6.00 g, 24.7 mmol) in methanol (60 ml) was added piperidine (6.30 g, 74.0 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The solvent was then evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was poured into water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo to afford methyl (4-piperidin-1-yl-methyl-phenyl)acetate as a pale red oil (5.98 g, 24.2 mmol, 98%).
