Procedure

To a stirred solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (7.28 g, 28.0 mmol) in DMF (100 mL) was added sodium carbonate (11.9 g, 112 mmol) and methyl iodide (15.9 g, 112 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 8 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered and washed with ethyl acetate. The combined filtrate was washed with water and the aqueous phase was re-extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the titled compound as a solid. (7.74 g, quantitative yield). 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ (ppm); 8.17 (s, 1H), 7.91 (s, 1H), 3.96 (s, 3H), 2.59 (s, 3H).
