To a solution of 5-nitro-N-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)isoquinolin-1-amine (1.0 g, 3.0 mmol) in a mixture of EtOH:H2O (8:2, 10 mL) were added iron powder (1.26 g, 4.8 mmol), and NH4Cl (1.6 g, 30.0 mmol). The reaction mass was heated at reflux for 2 h and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was purified by column chromatography to afford 0.800 g of the title product. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 9.18 (s, 1H), 8.35 (s, 1H), 8.20 (d, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.93 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 1H), 7.65 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.52 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.42-7.24 (m, 3H), 6.86 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 5.84 (s, 2H).
