Procedure

1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride was prepared by heating a mixture of 1-methylimidazole and 1-chlorobutane (molar ratio of 1:1) at 90° C. for 24 h followed by washing with ether for three times. The chemical structure of the ionic liquid was confirmed by 1H NMR and is shown in Scheme 1 (I). The structure of another ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate purchased from Aldrich is shown in Scheme 1 (11).
