Sodium nitrite (22 mmol) was added in small portions to a stirred solution of 3-amino-7-hydroxybenzo[e][1,2,4]triazine 1-oxide (20 mmol) in TFA (40 mL) at 5° C., and the solution stirred at 20° C. for 3 h. The solution was poured into ice/water (400 mL), stirred 30 min, filtered, washed with water (3×10 mL) and dried.
