6-methoxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one (17.2 g, 106 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (700 mL). The mixture was heated to 40° C., then isoamyl nitrite (30 mL, 220 mmol) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (17 mL) were added. The reaction mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 2 hours. After cooled to room temperature, the precipitate was collected by filtration and dried under high vacuum to obtain product (10.0 g, yield 50%).
