Procedure
To a solution of (2-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (11 g, 72.3 mmol) in 100 mL of MeOH was added SOCl2 (17.2 g, 144.7 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 50° C. overnight. The reaction was concentrated. The residue was purified column chromatography to give methyl (2-hydroxyphenyl)acetate.
