Procedure
To a solution of 1-(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)ethanone (5.0 g, 24.5 mmol) and diethyl oxalate (4.3 g, 29.4 mmol) in MeOH (60 mL) was added NaOMe (30% in MeOH, 5.3 g, 29.4 mmol). The mixture was stirred at RT for 4 h and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was treated with 2N aq. HCl (15 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine (100 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford methyl 2,4-dioxo-4-(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)butanoate as a brown oil (6.85 g, 96%), which was used in the next step without further purification. MS (ES+) C12H9F3O5 requires: 290. found: 291 [M+H]+.
