Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate (11.7 g, 68.7 mmol), ethylene glycol (5.75 mL, 103 mmol) and p-TsOH (0.620 g, 3.26 mmol) in toluene (60 mL) was stirred at reflux using a Dean-Stark trap to collect water over 4 hrs. The resulting mixture was cooled to room temperature, quenched with a saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution (30 mL) and diluted with EtOAc (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine (30 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to afford a yellow oil. The crude material was adsorbed onto silica and purification by chromatography eluting with 0-100% EtOAc in iso-hexane afforded the title compound;
