A mixture of benzyl 2,4-bis(benzyloxy)-5-methoxy-6-(1-methyl-1H-indol-5-yl)nicotinate (73 mg, 0.12 mmol) and 10% Pd/C (18 mg) in ethyl acetate (3.0 mL) was stirred for 2 h at room temperature under a hydrogen balloon. The mixture was then filtered. The filtrate was evaporated and the residue was triturated with ether to give 4-hydroxy-5-methoxy-6-(1-methyl-1H-indol-5-yl)-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid (27 mg, 69%).
