AIBN (141 mg, 0.857 mmol) and NBS (839 mg, 4.72 mmol) were added to a suspension of 2-(3-methyl-1H-indazol-1-yl)benzonitrile (1 g, 4.29 mmol) in CCl4 (20 mL) and the mixture heated to reflux for 2 h. The mixture was concentrated and the residue purified by silica gel chromatography to give the title compound (1.25 g, 93%) as an off white solid.
