Procedure

To a solution of (E)-cyclooct-2-enol 31 (minor isomer 100 mg, 0.792 mmol) in dichloromethane (6 mL) were added benzyl isocyanate (101 μL, 110 mg, 0.826 mmol, 1.04 eq) and a drop of triethylamine. The flask was covered with aluminum foil and the solution was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature overnight. Evaporation of the reaction mixture gave mainly starting material. Benzyl isocyanate (200 μL, 220 mg, 1.65 mmol, 2.08 eq) and a drop of triethylamine in dichloromethane (6 mL) were added and the solution was stirred overnight at room temperature, at 50° C. for 1 hr and at 25-30° C. over the weekend. The volatiles were removed by bulb-to-bulb distillation (50° C., 2 hr). The residue was purified by column chromatography to give carbamate 32 (43 mg, 0.166 mmol, 20.9%) as a white solid.
