Procedure
Sodium (Z)-(2-oxodihydrofuran-3(2H)-ylidene)methanolate (1.36 g, 10 mmole) was added to a solution of 600 mg. (10 mmole) of urea in 50 ml. of absolute ethanol, and the reaction mixture was boiled under reflux for 5 h with stirring. Concentration under vacuum gave a residue, which was crystallized from ethanol to yield 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrimidine-2,4-diol (290 mg, 18.5%). LC-MS (m/z)=157 [M+H]+
