Procedure
A solution of 2,3-diaminopyridine (1.00 g, 9.16 mmol) in trifluoroacetic acid (10 mL) was stirred for 15 h at 110° C. (microwave). The trifluoroacetic acid was then evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was co-evaporated with toluene three times. The resulting solid was triturated with water, filtered and dried under reduced pressure to give 1.30 g (6.95 mmol, 76%) 2-(trifluoromethyl)-4H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine. Alternatively, the latter can be prepared according to J. Chem. Soc., Perkin 1 1996, (22), 2685-2691.
