To a stirred solution of tri-methylsulfonium iodide (6.12 g, 30 mmol) in dry THF (50 mL) at −10° C. was added drop-wise butyllithium (14 mL, 2.5 M in hexane). The reaction mixture was stirred at −10° C. for 30 min, and a solution of diepoxide 32 (570 mg, 5 mmol) in dry THF (5 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, and the white suspension was stirred overnight. The mixture was treated with a saturated aqueous NH4Cl solution (15 mL), extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×10 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated. The crude product was purified on silica gel (pentane/ether 50/50) to yield the compound 33 (360 mg, 45% yield)
