Procedure
To a stirred solution of 5,5,5-trifluoro-3-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-oxo-pent-2-enoic acid (D5) (1.4 g, 5.3 mmol) in a mixture of ethanol (10 ml) and acetic acid (1 ml), was added hydrazine hydrate (0.49 ml, 9.33 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 16 h, cooled to room temperature, diluted with dichloromethane and then extracted with 0.5 M hydrochloric acid (150 ml). The organic layer was separated, dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent evaporated in vacuo to yield D6 (0.96 g, 70%) as a mixture of isomers. C11H6F4N2O requires 258; Found 259 (MH+).
