To a solution of methyl 4-cyclobutyl-2-methyl-5-(5-methyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)benzoate (compound 78.3, 240 mg, 0.842 mmol) in methanol (5 mL) was added aqueous NaOH (6 mL, 1 M). The resulting mixture was heated to 50° C. for 6 hours then cooled to ambient temperature and acidified to pH 2 with aqueous 1 M HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine (50 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield the title compound as a white solid (260 mg, quantitative). m/z (ES+) 272 (M+H)+.
