Procedure
2-(2-Cyanopropyl)-4-(4-methoxybenzyl)cyclohexanone (1.5 g) was added to glacial acetic acid (20 ml) containing 45% w/v hydrogen bromide in acetic acid (5 ml) and the mixture was left to stir for 21/2 hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was suspended in water and filtered to give the title compound on recrystallisation (0.5 g) mp 182°-184° C.
