A mixture of compound H (404 mg), ethyl 2-(4-bromomethylphenoxy)phenylacetate (700 mg) and potassium carbonate (552 mg) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (10 ml) was heated under reflux for 1 hour. Insoluble material was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography, eluting with ethyl acetate/hexane (7:3 v/v), to give ethyl 2-[4-((5,7-diethyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-1,6-naphthyridin-1-yl)methyl)phenoxy]phenylacetate (A) (390 mg), as a gum; NMR (CDCl3): 1.2(t, 3H), 1.25(t, 3H), 1.35(t, 3H), 2.8(q, 2H), 3.1(q, 2H), 4.1-4.25(m, 2H), 5.4(s, 2H), 5.55(s, 1H), 6.7(d, 1H), 6.85(s, 1H), 6.9(d, 2H), 7.15(d, 2H), 7.3-7.4(m, 3H), 7.5-7.6(m, 2H), 7.95(d, 1H).
