To a solution of methyl 3-[1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-3-trimethylacetyl-5-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)indol-2-yl]-2,2-dimethylpropanoate (EP 419,049, Mar. 27, 1991, Example 54, Step A) (11.5 g) in 150 mL DMF at 100° C. was added CuCl2 ·2H2O (4.9 g) in 26 mL H2O. After 7 hours, the solution was cooled, poured onto aqueous NH4OAc, and extracted with EtOAc. The organic phase was washed twice with NH4OAc (aq), washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and evaporated. Purification of the residue by chromatography on silica gel (8% EtOAc in toluene) gave the title compound as a brown gum.
