Procedure
To a solution of 17-Allyl-1,14-dihydroxy-12-[2-(3,4-dihydroxycyclohexyl)-1-methylvinyl]-23,25-dimethoxy-13,19,21,27-tetramethyl-11,28-dioxa-4-azatricyclo[22.3.1.04,9 ]octacos-18-ene-2,3,10,16-tetraone (100 mg) in toluene (20 ml) was added p-toluenesulphonic acid (5 mg) and the resulting solution was warmed for 90 minutes on a steam bath. Evaporation of volatiles in vacuo and chromatography of the residue on silica eluting with ethyl acetate gave an oil which was dissolved in methanol (5 ml). To this was then added 10% palladium-on-carbon (20 mg) and the mixture was stirred in an atmosphere of hydrogen for 1 hour at room temperature. The reaction mixture was then filtered through celite, concentrated in vacuo and purified by chromatography on silica eluting with ethyl acetate to give the title compound as an oil (40 mg).
