A solution of benzyl 1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptan-3,7-dione-2-carboxylate (26 mg) in anhydrous methanol (1 ml) at 0° C. is treated with ethereal CH2N2 until a yellow color persists. The mixture is stirred 15 more minutes in the cold and then evaporated in vacuo. Chromatography of the residue on silica gel provides benzyl 3-methoxy-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-7-one-2-carboxylate.
