Procedure
To the hydrazine (Intermediate 39; 3.75 g; 0.018 mol) and sodium cyanate (3.54 g; 0.054 mol) in toluene (30 ml) was added, dropwise, trifluoroacetic acid (5.82 g; 3.93 ml; 0.051 mol). This mixture was stirred for 3 h. and was then quenched with sodium bicarbonate and extracted into ethyl acetate. The organic extract was washed with sodium bicarbonate, water and brine and then dried (Na2SO4). Filtration and evaporation gave a cream solid which, on trituration with ether, afforded the title compound as a white solid (2.21 g; 49%), m.p. 128°-130° C.
