To a solution of 1.28 g (4 mmol) of methyl 8-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-[3-(3-pyridyl)propyl]octanoate in 20 mL methylene chloride at 0° C. is added 0.9 mL (6.5 mmol) triethylamine followed by 0.4 mL (5.2 mmol) methanesulfonyl chloride. After 1 hour, the reaction is diluted with methylene chloride and washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate, water and brine. The organic phase is dried, filtered and evaporated to give methyl 8-methanesulfonyloxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-[3-(3-pyridyl)propyl]-octanoate as an oil.
