Procedure

21.6 g of 2-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-5-phthalimidomethylisoindoline and 5 ml of hydrazine hydrate was dissolved in 300 ml of methanol and the solution was heated under reflux for 2 hours. After reaction mixture was allowed to cool, 50 ml of water was added to it. The mixture was concentrated to a half volume under reduced pressure. To the residue 500 ml of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide and 1 liter of chloroform were added and the whole mixture was thoroughly shaken. The chloroform layer was separated and washed with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide and then with water. After removing the solvent by evaporation, the residue was recrystallized from ether to give 15.0 g of 2-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-5-aminomethylisoindoline.
