A flask was charged with the crude 4-chloro-2-methoxy-N′-(5-(4-methoxyphenyl)pyridin-2-yl)-benzohydrazide and POCl3 (13 mL), and the mixture was stirred at 80-100° C. overnight. The mixture was evaporated and the residue was adjusted to pH=9 with aqueous Na2CO3, then it was extracted with ethyl acetate (50 mL×4). The extract was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed by evaporation. The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica (petroleum ether:ethyl acetate=1:1 to 0:1) to give the title compound as white solids (208 mg, 75.0% yield). 1H NMR (DMSO-d6): 8.17 (m, 1H), 7.92 (dd, J=9.6 and 1.2 Hz, 1H), 7.77 (dd, J=9.6 and 1.8 Hz, 1H), 7.68-7.62 (m, 3H), 7.40 (d, J=2.1 Hz, 1H), 7.25 (dd, J=8.1 and 2.1 Hz, 1H), 7.04 (d, J=6.6 Hz, 2H), 3.88 (s, 3H), 3.80 (s, 3H). MS: m/z 366.2 [M+H+].
