A mixture of tert-butyl 4-(5-bromopyrimidin-2-yl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (5.0 g, 14.6 mmol), 2-fluorobenzenethiol (9.3 g, 73 mmol), 1,10-Phenanthroline (7.9 g, 43.8 mmol), copper iodide (13.9 g, 73 mmol) and cerium carbonate (28.6 g, 87.6 mmol) in dioxane (100 mL) was refluxed for 3 days. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT and concentrated. The residue was directly purified by silica gel chromatography to give the title compound. MS (ES+) C19H23FN4O2S requires: 390. found: 391 [M+H]+.
