(R)-1-(4-Iodo-2-nitrophenyl)-2-methyl-1-propyl (1S)-camphanate (0.41 g, 0.82 mmol) was dissolved in hot methanol (60 mL) and K2CO3 (0.22 g, 1.58 mmol) was added. The mixture was heated to reflux for one hour, cooled to room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to yield (R)-1-(4-Iodo-2-nitrophenyl)-2-methyl-1-propanol (0.262 g, 100%) as a light yellow oil. 1H NMR was identical to that of the racemic alcohol.
