To a solution of 4-chloro-3′,5′-difluoro-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylbiphenyl-2-carbaldehyde (1.00 g, 3.22 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) was added 1.0 M sodium hydroxide in water (16 mL, 16 mmol), followed by 1.0 M sodium hydroxide in water. After stirred at rt overnight, the mixture was slowly acidified to pH 5 with 1 N HCl, then extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated to dry under reduced pressure. The crude residue was used directly in next step (1.05 g, 100%).
