1-(bromoethyl)benzene (1.3 g, 7.03 mmol) was added to ethyl 3,5-dimethylisonicotinate (0.7 g, 3.91 mmol) in dioxane (20 mL) and the resultant mixture was stirred at reflux overnight. The resulting solution was used to the next step without further purification.
