Procedure
A mixture of 202 mg of 6-methoxy-5-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxamide (1 mmol), 0.47 mL of phosphorus oxychloride (5 mmol) and 3 mL of chloroform was refluxed for 2 hs. Then cooled solution was poured into 10 mL of water and stirred for 1 hr. After separation the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was purified on silica gel column using hexane-ethyl acetate 5:1 to afford 116 mg of 6-methoxy-5-methyl-1H-indole-2-carbonitrile. 1H NMR (600 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.26 (br, 1H), 7.37 (s, 1H), 7.06 (s, 1H), 6.76 (s, 1H), 3.88 (s, 1H), 2.28 (s, 3H).
