Procedure
1N Hydrochloric acid (10 mL) was added to 1-[2-methoxy-6-methyl-4-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)-benzyl]-piperidine (2.33 g, 7.3 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) and the reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 9 by the addition of saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution (20 mL) and the aqueous phase was extracted with DCM (3×30 mL). The combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to afford a colourless oil. The resultant oil was purified by flash chromatography (silica, 12 g column, ISCO, 0-15% (2N ammonia in MeOH) in DCM) to afford the title compound as a white solid (570 mg, 33%). NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): 6.14 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 1H), 5.99 (s, 1H), 3.68 (s, 3H), 3.49 (s, 2H), 2.56-2.46 (m, 4H), 2.25 (s, 3H), 1.65-1.51 (m, 4H), 1.48-1.36 (s, 2H).
