Procedure

Iron powder (0.218 g, 3.9 mmol) and NH4Cl (0.208 g, 3.9 mmol) was added to a solution of 1I (1.7 g, 3.9 mmol) in 15 mL of ethanol-water (2:1) mixture. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 3 h, and solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography using 25% ethyl acetate in hexane to afford the title compound (1.2 g, 53%) as a solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.20 (d, J=2.8 Hz, 1H), 8.09 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 7.88-7.78 (m, 2H), 7.60 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.06 (dd, J1=2.9 Hz, J2=8.5 Hz, 1H), 4.13 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 3.86 (s, 2H), 3.20-3.02 (m, 2H), 2.98-2.81 (m, 2H), 2.72-2.53 (m, 2H), 2.51-2.28 (m, 2H), 1.24 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 3H). ESI-MS m/z: 407 (M+H)+.
