A suspension of 5,7-dichloro-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carbonitrile (0.77 mmol) in 2 mL 25% HCl solution and 2 mL AcOH was heated to 100° C. for 5 h. At RT, the reaction was quenched with water and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give the desired compound as brown solid.
