Procedure
A solution of (6-methoxypyridin-3-yl)methanol (2.9 g, 20.93 mmol) and triethylamine (4.35 mL) in dichloromethane (20 mL) was treated with methanesulfonyl chloride (2.9 g, 25.1 mmol) dropwise and the reaction mixture stirred at rt overnight. After this time, the reaction was diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride. The combined organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated to afford the title compound (1.4 g, 49%) as a yellow oil. MW=217.24. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz) δ 8.16-8.14 (m, 1H), 7.68-7.59 (m, 1H), 6.76 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H), 4.55 (s, 2H), 3.94 (s, 3H), 3.19 (s, 3H).
