A solution of 760 mg (5.6 mmol) of 3-pyridin-2-ylpropionaldehyde in 3 mL of THF was treated with 13.6 mL (6.8 mmol, 1.2 eq.) of trimethyl(trifluoromethyl)silane (0.5 M solution in THF) and 0.06 mL (0.06 mmol) of tetrabutylammonium fluoride (1.0 M solution in THF) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 10 minutes, and quenched with 1 N HCl solution. After stirring for 5 minutes, the pH of the reaction mixture was adjusted to 9 with saturated NaHCO3 solution, and the product was extracted into ether. The ethereal layer was washed with water and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography to give 706 mg (61%) of 1,1,1-trifluoro-4-pyridin-2-ylbutan-2-ol as a colorless oil.
