Methyl 4-({[(cis-4-aminocyclohexyl)carbonyl]amino}methyl)benzoate (1.48 g, 3.67 mmol, 1.00 equiv) was added to the suspension prepared in step a. The resulting mixture was heated to 40° C. and treated with 1 N NaOH to maintain a pH of 9-10. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min and then used immediately in the next step without workup or purification. MS (ES+): m/e 537.1 [M+H]+.
