Procedure
A stirred solution of p-chloropropiophenone (2.0 g, 11.9 mmol) in dichloromethane (35 mL) was treated with one drop of 48% HBr and one drop of bromine. When the color had discharged, bromine (608 μL, 1.90 g, 11.9 mmol) was added dropwise. The solution was stirred until 15 min after the color had fully discharged, then the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 2-bromo-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-propan-1-one.
