Procedure

A solution of N-(3,4-dimethyl-phenyl)-4-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzamide (700 mg) in ethanol (50 mL) was hydrogenated over PtO2 at 40 psi for 3 h. The catalyst was filtered through Celite and the filtrate evaporated to give 3-amino-N-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-4-hydroxy-benzamide as an off-white solid, mp=220-223° C.; MS (m/z) 255 (M−1).
