To a stirred solution of a diastereomeric mixture of 1-{2-[2-cyclopentyl-1-(4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl)-ethyl]-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-5-yl}-ethane-1,2-diol (366 mg, 0.86 mmol) in 50% aqueous tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) was added sodium metaperiodate (366 mg, 1.71 mmol) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h and extracted with ethyl acetate and washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give 2-[2-cyclopentyl-1-(4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl)-ethyl]-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-5-carbaldehyde (340 mg, quant.) as a light yellow solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C22H24N2OS [M+H]+ 397.51, observed 397.0.
