To a stirred solution of 1-(1-benzenesulfonyl-5-fluoro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-2-cyclobutyl-1-(4-methylsulfinyl-phenyl)-ethanol (512 mg, 1 mmol) in methanol (50 mL) and water (10 mL) was added potassium permanganate (126 mg, 0.8 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h, diluted with ethyl acetate (150 mL), washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to afford 1-(1-benzenesulfonyl-5-fluoro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-2-cyclobutyl-1-(4-methylsulfonyl-phenyl)-ethanol (520 mg, quant.) as a light yellow solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C26H25FN2O5S2 [M+H]+ 529.63, observed 529.0.
